The Bransford Webbs Plant Company was formed through the merger of Bransford Garden Plants and Webbs Nurseries in August 2005. Both nurseries have a long history of supplying superb quality garden plants to UK garden centres.

Webbs Nurseries origins can be traced back to the middle of the 19th century, beginning life as an agricultural seed merchant. Bransford Nursery evolved from a traditional fruit, hop and livestock farm where a small number of glasshouses were used to propagate hops for three months of the year. John Tooby, the company's founder wanted to utilise these glasshouses for the other nine months of the year and eventually nursery production replaced the unprofitable fruit business.

In the 1960s, Bransford became an important producer of roses and trees, and was regarded as an innovator within the industry helping pioneer the production of trees and shrubs in containers. During the 1970s Bransford was still leading the way in the industry and following John Edmonds, general manager, scholarship to the USA, Bransford became the first UK nursery to use Osmocote, a controlled release fertiliser. The 'Plant a tree in '73' campaign led to the forming of the Tree Council and instigated Tree Week. William Tooby, the son of the founder and current chairman, became nursery manager in 1982, and the business focused solely on the wholesale of quality stock to garden centres across the UK, moving away from hops completely. Livestock farming became a marginal enterprise.

For Bransford Nurseries, the 1990's saw the introduction of many promotional plants and ranges, namely Hebe 'Rosie' with its pink pots, Breathe with Ease, Hebe 'Purple Pixie' in purple pots, the POTS series, Geranium 'Pink Spice', Hebe 'Pink Paradise' and 'Silver Dollar' and Alstoemeria 'Inca'. During this time Bransford Nursery became Bransford Garden Plants to reflect the emphasis of the business on quality garden plants.

The beginning of the new millennium saw more plants and concepts being introduced to the garden centre market by Bransford Garden Plants, as well as a major capital investment programme that transformed the site into a modern nursery. Again, many new plants and concepts were introduced throughout this period including The Bransford Zone, Fuchsia Janie, Tree Wheels and Triangles, Hebe 'Pink Pixie' - our biggest promotion to date. By 2005, Bransford Nurseries had been transformed with the addition of two new 5000m2 of glasshouses, a purpose built potting facility and new propagation unit, creating a modern and efficient site. In the summer of 2005, Bransford Garden Plants and Webbs Nurseries merged to form The Bransford Webbs Plant Company. The combination of both companies improved quality, efficiency and the range offered to a larger customer base.

The innovation of concepts and new plants has continued with Dianthus 'Passion' and 'Memories', Clematis 'Bijou' and 'Filigree', Buddleja Chips, and our Cut your Own range. In 2009, The Bransford Webbs Plant Company was awarded Grower of the Year in both the hardy nursery stock category and overall ornamental awards. For 2012, a new despatch and office facility has been developed, and the nursery continues to go from strength to strength.
