Over a twelve month period over 800 000 plants across 400 varieties are propagated in this unit, from cuttings, grafts, seed and splits in the propagation unit. Of the final plants sold by Bransford Webbs, 70% are propagated here at the nursery. Young plants are potted into liners using a potting machine within the propagation unit, and transferred to the adjacent liner unit.

A purpose built potting facility is located at the centre of the nursery, reducing the distance plants are transported to their growing beds, with the capacity to pot up to 18 000 plants a day. 1.1million plants are potted into 1L, 2L and 3L pots by machine each year, and this accounts for 90% of plants potted. The remaining 10%, bare root trees, hedging and roses, are potted by hand into larger pots.

Polytunnels account for 60% of growing space on the nursery - the low tunnels allow flexibility as the skins can be removed whereas the tall tunnels are a more permanent environment. Our glasshouses, which account for 25% of growing space on the nursery, are fully automated to allow us to optimise plant growth and development. The remaining 25% of growing space consists of outdoor beds which areopen to the elements.

Our despatch unit is a 1600sqm purpose built facility, allowing fast and efficient despatching of plants 12 months of the year. Up to 80,000 plants can be loaded on to 750 Danish trolleys to make up 340 deliveries per week at the peak of the season.
